Monday's Musings - Christmas memories

Hola,

I spent Christmas Day with my small, but immediate family for the first time in awhile, and as the gathering ebbed and flowed, I wondered exactly how long was it since I'd last sat in the front room of the corner house my Ma has called home for her entire 69 years.

"It's got to be at least 10 years since I was actually home for Christmas Day," I said.

Having arrived home, it was time to go for a pint!

"I can't remember, son," said Ma, "but it's definitely been years."

Next time my Da walked into the room, I asked him the same question, and he also couldn't remember when, so I got intrigued and between the three of us, we eventually figured out I hadn't been home for Christmas Day since 1991.

Bloody hell, that's 27 years ago!

I was shocked, and while I'd been home a few times before Christmas, and after Christmas, I was sad that I'd missed so many chances to make silly, family memories that only happen on Christmas Day.

Me brother listens as me Da shares a memory of his days sailing the seven seas.

After 8 days, I left home to go home, but am already looking forward to our next Christmas Day together. We had a lovely, quiet day and all promised to do it again this year. Of course, life has many ups and downs and who knows what will happen, but I loved being there, especially at that magical time of the year - and hope you also created new memories to treasure with your loved ones.

Happy New Year, and wishing you the very best for 2019.

That's a long time. But it's been 34 years since I was home for Christmas. Less than 10 since we spent it with in-law though.

It is indeed a shame that families drift apart, get busy... mine is like that without the excuse of a job.

As a mom, the idea of not having one of my babies home for Christmas for 27 years makes me sad. I bet your mom is so happy to have you closer to home now. Good Mark. :)

Awww, so nice to have had that time with your loved ones. I think the only thing that would have made it better was to have M and the boys there too. 27 years! I can't imagine not having Christmas with my family for that long! This year was a first for me in that my hubby was in France and therefore we were apart for the first time in 37 years for Christmas. Technology helped a lot though and I got to see him every day he was gone. I loved being back in NC with my son, my parents and my sister and her family, so all was good, and yes, we too, made new memories... Happy new year Mark!
