You Know You're A Parent When... it's 'Gradulation' Time :)

Aloha,

It’s been seven months since I’ve posted one of my You Know You’re A Parent When… series, so now that I’m (about) done with WIP#1 edits, what better than to jump back and offer a few warning signs tips to “in-coming” parents – or remind those with children why we have no more are blessed.

You know you’re a parent when…

...You've missed naptime by ten minutes, and the Zombies have attacked the 100-Acre Wood...

No, leave me. It's too late for Pooh... Go! Save the Butt Paste

Stop, I say, STOP!!!

...You appreciate No. 2 Son for his optimism...

... but are there for the aftermath

Ahem, Carry On...

...You clean the patio windows to perfection, (sweating like a Zoomba dancer using illegal narcotics in the noon sun,) so the kids can use their new pack of Crayola Window Crayons… (I don’t make this stuff up, folks – well, except for the Zoomba dancer thing!)

...You bring the kids to the new dinosaur exhibit at the Bishop Museum and the first words out of No. 1 Son, (who's since grounded until he is 40 - at least) are, "Look Papa, it's a Dinosaur Papa - he has no hair, too!"

Earliest Known SIGGY :)

...You finish a well-listened to (including good eye-contact) “Stranger Danger” conversation, only to see No. 1 Son immediately run to the next person walking in the park and ask, “What’s your name called?”

....You remember to sing (or at least hum) the words to Cat in the Cradle in the midst of a ridiculous multi-tasking moment when:

No. 3 Son cries ‘cos he threw his pacifier under the couch (accompanied by the usual “Oh ohhhh…”)

No. 2 Son asks again for his soup, which you are cooking (while trying to move the couch.)

and...

No. 1 Son wants to share something important (about ice melting) that’s really important – to him.

...You wander up the stairs, only to discover rumors that the 100 Acres Wood has been freed by Rebel Children are unsubstantiated.

I smell like Pooh

I can't smell anything..

...You and your spouse happily manhandle bring the kids to somewhere (LOUD) like Ruby Tuesdays on a Friday at 3 p.m. for “date afternoons.”

And finally... when you're told about "Gradulation", it becomes the coolest word of the day.

(Courtesy of our 5-year-old who "Gradulated" from Kindergarten this week.)

Dude, can I borrow the car keys now?

Congratulations to your son!
That dinosaur does look a lot like you...
I don't think you made up the Zoomba dancer part though.
Have a great weekend, Sven!

Aw! Congratulations to your son!
Í agree with Alex - you Zoombaed. Admit it. And yes, I understand. Parenting does it to us all.

Cute pics and congratulations to your son! He looks so much older in his little cap and gown. Is that a used tissue he's about to give back to you? (:
And 'Dino Papa' had me ROFL! :D

We didn't have a kindergarten graduation, they just took our crayons and finger paint and said,
"Bye Bye, good luck!"

You know, at least he only compared your hair to a dinosaur. I know a guy with disproportionally short arms and his kids said he looked like a T-Rex. Yeah, that hurts.

I told you to make the sand castle further up the sand, but noooo. lol! Yes, I've been there. :-) You captured it well.

Window crayons? Heck, mine decided to be a muralist.

On the outside of the house.

I like to never get it off the siding. Fortunately, he mostly used sidewalk chalk--that's much easier to remove.

Cherish the memories. They grow up so fast, papa.

Oh Mark-- how cute are your kiddos! These made me laugh. My daughter was a big Pooh and Tigger fan when she was "wittle". I miss those days! My firstborn just graduated from college and I'm going through all kinds of "where did the time go" with this one! Thanks for the laughter and tenderness this morning. :)

Love the pictures with the wave, and I'm going to have to find window crayons. I pulled out the playdough the other day and had an hour of blissful peace, no fighting or yelling, just a little mess to clean up at the end. So worth it.

Hey Dino pops! Looking good...was that the Jurassic High Prom pic?

They do grow fast. You're a wise man to enjoy it.

(Isn't it funny how kids have that optimism? Mine swore if you turned around and wiggled your butt at the ocean, you got a big wave.)

Love, love, LOVE!!!!!

You know, I've got a girl the same age as your graduate... we could have a Koopmans inlaw in the future. Wouldn't that be fun? Do they still do arranged marriages??? ;-)

Love these posts, Mark!

Great post. I love the pics.
I got suckered into buying preschool graduation pics for kid #2. They're just too cute not to buy.

I laughed out loud at the papa dinosaur comment! And you get boundless daddy points for cleaning windows only to have them covered in crayons!

Aww. I loved this. I do miss your "You know you're a parent when," post. Congratulations on your gradulation. It sees like not long ago when my kids graduated kindergarten and this year one graduated from elementary school, one from middle school and two more years and one will graduate from college. How did that happen so fast?

Oh, you know you've really Zumba'd a few times. Hehehe...and the dinosaur might have had me rolling. Congrats on the Gradulation. I'm sure you are one proud Daddy!

Thanks for the laughs. I have a 6 year old and can identify with you. *F.Y.I. Do NOT let anyone EVER introduce your children to Minecraft. Just sharing a lesson I learned too late. *sigh*

Congrats to your son! Loved your post—I can definitely relate to a lot of it.

Thanks for dropping by my blog during last Monday's Blitz. You all made my day. ☺

I hope you're having a great weekend.

Wow. You guys go all out on graduation. My kindergartner made her black hat out of paper.

Of course we celebrated the last day of school by going to Dairy Queen. You just gotta do that.
