With only fifty days before my first draft deadline of WIP #1, I am, nah-yah, somewhat "stressed" when it comes to writing.
So, in order to combat the claustrophobic lack of time I feel surrounding my remaining seven wrinkly braincells, I took a day off.
As you do.
A complete not-a-single-WIP-word, Thursday off.
I wasn't a Writer.
I wasn't a Researcher.
I wasn't a Stats-Checker.
I was, however, a baseball coach.
A terrifically bad baseball coach.
But I was a coach...
...to poor No. 1 Son, who is by default my guinea-pig experiment into being a Parent Coach.
His first ever T-ball "game" is soon.
He's excited.
I'm excited that he's excited.
Maybe I'll write about it.
Maybe I shouldn't...
But, I'll definitely coach it.
Because.... I've signed up...
(thrusts chest out, while sucking in former six-pack, turned current keg :)
...to be an "assistant coach" with a vivid imagination.
The Coaches schedule is coming through on the email...
Let me see.... the responsibilities of the assistant coach are...
(I'll be the bench coach and the hitting coach... ohhh, will I get a stopwatch?)
The email opens with nary a click.
The search is on. What does the assistant coach do?

Did Joe Torre, Yogi Berra or Mike Scioscia ever organize snacks, picture day and general team logistics.
I have no idea, but when I see my beautiful boy step up to the plate for the first time, I will gladly slice oranges and be Gen. Logistics until the Cubbies win the World Series :)

I agree. Snacks: very important. If they don't have the proper snacks, they will lack energy and the game will be lost. This is a lot of pressure. You can handle it.
Also. Pictures: very important. Ten years down the road he will not remember how many runs he scored. How many games he won/lost. But he'll look at that picture. And remember he had fun. And see that Dad was there... So smile nicely.
Snack organization is very tricky indeed. I could never do it.
Sounds like a great time to spend your day off though. Enjoy each moment.
I used to be assistant coach for soccer. I was so thrilled when my kids didn't want to play anymore. I didn't want to coach the older kids (even if I do have a physical ed degree). But coaching was more appealing than working the bottle drive or volunteering for the end of season barbecue. :D
Not sure which would be worse - coaching t-ball or soccer?
I never played T-ball but I did play little league softball. My mother brought snacks to games and once my father was recruited to be the umpire because the guy who was supposed to do it flaked. So my father said yes. And then he called me out on strikes. It was not a pretty time in our relationship.
But you probably won't have that problem with T-ball... have fun!

Your son is adorable. And T-Ball sounds like fun! Never forget that the snacks are the most important part. Have fun!! :)

That sounds like a fabulous way to take a break and let those few remaining brain cells recharge. Good luck with the first game and your first coaching experience. I am sure you'll be fabulous.

Looks like a blast! And snacks are the best part of t-ball (though, maybe I'm a little biased about that!).
Can you believe I hit myself with the T as a kid? Yeah. Didn't make me want to pursue baseball, but I took up swimming instead. Now if I can learn how to surf again, I'll be in business (and I think your coaching is coming along great, btw). :)

As a former tee-ball mom, whose husband was the coach...keep the kids from playing in the dirt and picking their nose on the filed and you've mastered the level.
What a cute kid!life does get in the way of writing, doesn't it? But i think being a coach was more important than being a writer that Thursday:P

Trust me when I say, snacks are important to growing boys. I know this from experience. lol! Mine is 17 and they're STILL important. I didn't coach baseball but soccer. you'll have fun. :-)
