Happy Thanksgiving from a non-Twinkie eater

Aloha,

Johanna Garth wrote a great Thanksgiving post titled Twinkie Americana, and my comments to her became the foundation for this post, so thanks for provoking my thoughts, Johanna and you can read the full post here.

(The rest of this post will make more sense if you read hers first J)

Johanna finishes her post with a comment and a question:
“Of course, this is all silly. There is no definitive list of characteristics about what makes the perfect American, but still, on the eve of our lovely national tradition of giving thanks, I'm wondering about the rest of you. Are you old school, Twinkies, baseball games and cowboy hats or is the apple in your Americana an icon on a computer?

For the curious (or insomniacs) the story behind my first Thanksgiving is here.
This year, I’ll be celebrating ten years of Thanksgivings with my wife’s family
(you’d think they would have learned by nowJ)
and I have to admit Thanksgiving is now my favorite holiday.

Off to take Thanksgiving Family Pictures

(As I write, the house is full of screaming kids, loud televisions and kitchen overhead fans as a multitude of dishes are either being prepped or made ahead of Thursday.)

As a naturalized American, I have *never* eaten a Twinkie, but I remember reading about them it seemed like in every Stephen King book when I was a teenager and - true story - when I came over in '96, one of the first things I bought was a Twinkie... and with tears in my eyes, I held that thing in my hand, turning it over and over and couldn't believe I was HERE.

Thanks for the memory zap, Johanna... I haven't thought about that Twinkie in years (and I didn't even eat it because I'm not a "sweets" person.)
To answer Johanna's questions in a couple of one liners:
I have a Stetson (bought in Colorado :)
I love baseball - especially T-ball (No. 1 Son has just started:)
Apple pie rocks - but only at the holidays

And while America is never perfect, it is still the land of the free, the home of the brave... and the place where dreams can come true :)

 Happy Thanksgiving y’all :)
It's my first Thanksgiving... wonder what the bunny will bring?

For me...

Twinkies: as a kid yes, but haven't had one in years.
No Stetson.
Baseball: yawn.
Apple pie: Yum! Especially with ice cream.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Tell him the bunny brings candy canes.
I haven't had a Twinkie in years. Never were my favorite. And we don't eat that kind of food anymore.
I like baseball in person, but have to say football is my favorite.

What??? You mean you've never had a twinkie wiener sandwich??? You know, twinkie cut like a bun, hot dog, then spray cheese on top???

*Shakes head*

Mark, you're missing out... ;-)

I'm not a big twinkie fan either. It's ok but I haven't eaten one in YEARS. Happy Thanksgiving and glad you're celebrating with family Mark.

I've never had a Twinkie either. Cupcakes & apple pies are a different story.

Happy Thanksgiving to you & yours!

Adorable baby!! And your Thanksgiving sounds awesome, glad you had such a nice one.

I used to own a cowboy hat, but my dog ate it. For real. And they're too expensive to buy another. haha

I never particularly enjoyed Twinkies.

I find baseball boring except for T-ball with my two year old grandson cause Jace can make anything fun.

But I'm still proud to be an American!! Great post!

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving, and family photos went well! I don't think I've ever eaten a twinkie, but they are totally an icon for the states (for better or worse!).

Twinkies. Hmmm. Used to love em as a kid, but now?

And who eats apple pie on Thanksgiving? :P It's pumpkin, man. And (if you live in the South), pecan. :D

Hi Mark, this was a fun piece to read. It is interesting to see what people consider most American. I never did like Twinkies, so don't lament their passing, but Ding Dongs? Come on. And Sno-Balls? Love those marshmallow, coconut, cream, devil's food cake concoctions. Pardon me while I wipe the drool off my keyboard. :-)

My fellow American...you rock! And so does Tee-ball. I miss tee-ball. Gotta go before I get all weepy...gonna go find me a Little Debbie, even if that tramp did run Twinkie into the ground.

Mark, thanks so much for the shout out and sorry I'm just now stopping by, but we had quite a busy four days. :)

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving with the family, Mark! I think you could save the Twinkie brand with an ad campaign built on that story - wow, who knew Twinkies could be like "coming to America?" ;)

Not eating Twinkies keeps the doctor away! Also it keeps you out of jail. You knew that, right?

Here's to all your Thanksgiving wishes coming true.

Now, please pass the Pepto Bismol. Do they still make that in pink?

Happy Thanksgiving to you. Twinkies scare me. LOL - they do belong in Stephen King novels.
